May 25 (VOA News) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai will visit the United
States next month to attend the Group of Eight summit meeting and hold talks
with President Bush and other high ranking U.S. officials.
Presidential spokesman Jawed Ludin told journalists in Kabul the Afghan
president will first travel to (the southeastern state of) Georgia to attend a
summit of the group of eight industrialized nations, which begins June 8.
From Georgia, Mr. Karzai will travel to Washington, where he is scheduled to
meet with President Bush, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of
State Colin Powell.
The talks in Washington are expected to focus on the ongoing U.S.-led war on
terrorism in Afghanistan, as well as several areas of reconstruction.
The United States is Afghanistans biggest donor, pouring billions of dollars
into building a new national army and reconstructing roads, schools, hospitals
and government ministries.
